In a time when the sciences were flourishing, anatomists all over Britain had a pressing need for cadavers. But with subjects in such short supply, this created a demand for a very particular kind of criminal: a profession by the name of 'resurrectionists'. Scientists were willing to pay handsomely for corpses to dissect, upwards of 1,000 dollars in today's value. For most resurrectionists, this meant unearthing the freshly deceased in the dead of night, but for others, these bounties suggested a different solution entirely: murder.
In other words, what if the process of stealing bodies from graves proved too unwieldy, yet the reward too tempting to ignore? In 1828, Edinburgh would discover that the unlikeliest individuals would rise to grasp this opportunity, forfeiting all humanity and empathy in the process.
